Melissa Harrison, MA

Marriage and Family Therapist Registered Intern

Supervised and Employed by Joseph Sousa, MFT#36685

I am a psychotherapist seeing clients in Santa Cruz, California as well as via telephone and Skype. I received my Masters degree in Psychology from Saybrook University in Oakland, CA and am a Marriage and Family Therapy Registered Intern in the state of California. I currently work with individuals, couples, and teenagers.

I am a client-centered therapist, trusting in our innate capacity to heal and the uniqueness of this journey for each client. I bring curiosity, acceptance, empathy, and humor to sessions and believe in the value of the therapeutic relationship to support healing and growth that is translatable to your life outside the session.

I have the latest training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to support your mind/body healing process by unlocking disturbing memories in the nervous system and allowing them to be processed and held in a new way. I also bring in elements of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness to help you in becoming more aware of your “stuck” places.

In addition to my education and therapeutic training, my work is informed by my first love of acting (BA in Theatre Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI), and the experiences of connection and presence that I experienced on stage. The yearning to transition these experiences into the rest of my life led me to nondual spirituality, which has had a profound effect on my life.

I am greatly influenced by the teachers Adyashanti, Eckhart Tolle, Byron Katie, and Gangaji.
